Mission over. Nothing happened and I can get back to the school. I drive at night, and it's 2 in the morning when I calculate in my mind the distance that separates me from Maci. I imagine her sleep, uneasy, missing my presence.
I turn the wheels and start to run to her. If I drive fast, I can get home in six hours, have breakfast with her and then be back at the accursed college in the morning. I drive fast, too fast. Six hours could even be five.
The road turns and my lights illuminate a shape. A deer. Frozen. I brake. Tires sweep the road. I turn the wheel. Darkness.
I wake up at the first lights of the day. My head hurts. No blood, just a bump. I jump out of the car, looking for signs of the deer. No blood. I saved.. No, I realize, he saved me.
I arrive at the school late, in a sorry state. I need to talk with the others, it's time to start to work on the girls. I check the reports and I take a quick decision. One of the girls used a cell phone inside the school. We have top electronics here. I listen to her conversation, then I file a copy to the strange nurse, Venturi, with a "decide and act" note.
Then there is the Grace file. I wonder if she's still going around pantiless as Fairbanks wrote. Time to use the Dorks gang that I have built. I call all of them in my office.
Their faces are a show that warms my heart. Fear and stupor. And the memory of having an expensive little thing like Christina in their hands for a short while. I just tell them they have not been good and that they will have to follow my instructions exactly. Their first task is to go and look at the cheerleaders team leader. I want a written report on her. They could not be more confused when the leave my office.
A long day at work, indeed.
